Distribution
The species is widespread in Wales, but widely scattered elsewhere, mainly on high ground in the Pennines, North Yorkshire Moors and Scotland. It has been recorded from the Scandinavian countries, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and Poland.

Habitat and ecology
C. norvegica occurs in wet places, mainly on high moorland, among moss and Sphagnum. Adults are found in early spring (males in February and March) and autumn, and possibly for most of the year.

Status
Recorded from 17 hectads since 1992, but showing an apparent decline of about 50% in hectads with spider records both before and after that date (30 to 14). However, most of the apparent decline is in Wales where wetland sites were the subject of a detailed invertebrate survey in the 1980s, added to which its rather inaccessible habitat may have resulted in recent under-recording, hence we prefer to treat this as not threatened, but with a Watching Brief. Where it does occur it may be numerous.

Threats
Possibly drainage and the loss of open moorland to afforestation at some sites.

Management and conservation
Wet moorland should be maintained by traditional management.
